‘Well, I think that’s all that need be said.’ This was Matron once again, taking over. ‘This has been a very unusual morning and as it is near lunchtime I’m sure we are all ready for a break of some kind. Will you call the nurse for Mr Wallingham, Sister, please?’

Matthew stood up. He felt that Matron was actually smiling; as for himself, he felt weak, drained yet elated. He’d be under Paul Jenkins. He had already talked to him a few times and he was a nice fellow.

As the nurse took his arm, he turned towards the table and said simply, ‘Thank you,’ then allowed himself to be led out.

They were halfway down the corridor when the Irish voice whispered, ‘You told them. Good for you! I’ve got good ears – lugs, me ma calls them. I’m taking you now,’ she went on, ‘to your man, who’s in the waiting room. Charlie Fox has just told me he seems to be in a bit of a stew about you. But Charlie assured him there wasn’t a scratch on you.’

A few minutes later Jim greeted him, saying anxiously, ‘You all right?’

‘Yes. Yes, Jim, I’m all right.’

‘What happened? Did they give you the push?’

‘Push? No, no, everything’s fine. I’ll tell you later. Is Li . . . Miss Ducksworth waiting?’

‘No; it’s only ten to twelve.’

‘Well, just take me to the hall, and then wait for her; I want to slip back to the ward and have a word with Sister Foster.’

‘I’ll do that. Sure you’re all right?’

‘Shut up, man, and do what you’re told for once!’

‘Well! Well!’ exclaimed Nurse Murphy. ‘Did you hear that? You were like the sergeant himself.’

‘Oh, I can be worse than the sergeant any day.’ Then his tone changed suddenly: ‘No, I can’t. I’d hate to be linked with him.’

‘Aye. Aye, indeed; it’s me mouth, it should never have said a thing like that. But come on, I’ll get you along to the ward and then, Mr Captain Wallingham, I’ll finish me time off, if you don’t mind.’
